What’s getting planned, designed, built?

Infrastructure projects can take a long, long, long time.  First the grant funding needs to be corralled and the project put on the 5-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP).  Then the city approves funds to plan the project.  Then more money is needed to design the project.

Public participation is required after these two steps.  This is our real opportunity to influence things and where we’ll want to use our voice and provide input.

And then we wait a bit.  And sometimes a bit more.

Next the city gets bids from contractors and the lowest one is selected and the project gets on the construction schedule (sometimes for more than one phase or construction season), and then it’s finally construction season when we deal with detours and blocked off roads.  But we forget about all that when, “The new bike lanes are here!  The new bike lanes are here!”

DSM Engineering

The mighty Engineering department spans lots of departments, including project permitting, right of way (ROW) closures, managing all that road construction, and our favorite:  Traffic & Transportation.
